Are you looking to shorten the distance between you and your food? Buy into a CSA!
This will be my thrid summer with Nathan Creek Organic farm. I love nothing more than picking up my bin on Tuesdays throughout the summer and discovering what is ripe from the farm. It is a ture thing of beauty & deliciousness. I ate so well last summer and was able to share my goods with my neighbours, feed my friends and preserve what I couldn’t manage to eat. (Pickled beans, soo good).
There are at least 10 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) projects serving Vancouver. Buying in to a CSA takes “buy local” one step further because you “buy into the farm”, which makes you a member of a co-op and directly supports the farm. Skipping the middleman per say. Members receive weekly deliveries of fresh produce for 20-25 weeks a year. Some CSAs even do a winter delivery of storage vegetables. CSAs are local, organic, sustainable, wholesome and promote community. Members are encouraged to visit the farm and get to know the land, farmers, farming techniques, as well as other members.
Its not to late to buy into a farm for the summer.
Here are a few CSAs in the lower mainland:
